Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • A pinch of Hing
  • Curry leaves
  • 1 finely chopped Tomato
  • 2 chopped Green chilies
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh Coconut
  • 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp Red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Gudh to taste (Optional)
  • 1/2 cup +1 tbsp Tur dal
  • Water
  • Salt to taste
  • Finely chopped Coriander leaves

Varan bhat

Instructions

Step 1: Heat up oil in a cooker and add mustard seeds.

Step 2: When mustard seeds pop up add cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves, tomato, green chilies and fry until tomato turns soft.

Step 3: Add garlic paste and fry for about a minute.

Step 4: Add fresh coconut and fry well.

Step 5: Add coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, gudh and mix well.

Step 6: Wash turdal really good 3-4 times and soak it in enough water for about 30 minutes.

Step 7: Drain all the water from soaked tur dal and add it into the cooker.

Step 8: Mix well and add water, salt and mix well.

Step 9: Close the lid and steam on medium heat for about 15-20 minutes. Make sure there is no whistle.

Step 10: Open the lid and beat the dal well.

Step 11: Add water to adjust the consistency and bring it to boil.

Notes

  • You can use grated dry coconut in place of fresh coconut.
  • Adding gudh is optional. You can skip it if you don’t want.
  • You can skip soaking dal if you don’t want.
