Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Chana dal
  • 1 tbsp Red chili powder
  • 10~12 Garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Hing
  • 8~10 Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves
  • Oil for tadka

Instructions

  • Wash the dal really good with water.
  • Add enough water and soak for about 2 hours.
  • Transfer the soaked dal into the cooker.
  • Add water, hing, and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  • Close the lid and cook on medium heat until 2 whistles.
  • Do not overcook the dal.
  • The dal must be well cooked but at the same time, it should not be mashed. It should retain its texture.
  • Add salt to taste and mix well.
  • No need to heat up the dal again for this recipe. Use the dal as it is from the cooker itself.
  • Take the dal out into a Katori in which you want to serve it.
  • You can mash it a little if you want. But make sure to maintain the texture of the dal.
  • For tadka, heat up oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and garlic.
  • Fry garlic until it turns nice golden.
  • When garlic turns golden, turn off the gas.
  • Add curry leaves and red chili powder.
  • Make sure to turn off the gas before adding red chili powder so that it won’t burn.
  • Add tadka on the dal in katori and chana dal tadka is already.
  • Do not mix the tadka at all with the dal.
  • You can serve chana dal tadka with jawar bhakari or bajari bhakari.
  • It goes well with rice too.
  • You can have this dal as it is as soup.

Notes

  • You can skip soaking and directly cook the dal in cooker. You will have to make more whistles to cook un soaked dal. Make about 4-5 whistles on medium heat.
  • Do not add tadka on whole dal and mix and serve.
