Ingredients

  • 1 cup Sabudana
  • Less than 1 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup raw Peanuts
  • 2 tbsp Ghee
  • Chopped Green chili
  • Boiled, peeled and chopped Potato
  • Roasted Peanut powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste (Optional)

Sabudana khichadi for Navaratri

Instructions

Step 1: Wash sabudana really good at least 3-4 times with water and soak it in enough water overnight or at least 4-5 hours.

Step 2: Add just enough water so that the sabudana will be soaked and a little water should float over it.

Step 3: If you think that sabudana is not soaked well, then sprinkle a little water on it and mix well. Rest it for about 10 minutes.

Step 4: Heat up a pan on medium heat and add peanuts.

Step 5: Sprinkle some water on it and roast the peanuts on medium heat really good.

Step 6: Turn off the gas and let them cool down.

Step 7: Peel the peanuts and remove the peels.

Step 8: Transfer the peanuts into a blender jar and blend them into coarse powder. Give few pulses so that there won’t be very fine powder.

Step 9: Heat up ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds.

Step 10: When cumin seeds splutter, add green chilies and fry it well.

Step 11: When green chilies change the color, add potato. Fry the potato well.

Step 12: Add sabudana and fry it really good for about 3-4 minutes.

Step 13: Cover and cook sabudana really good until it is cooked well.

Step 14: After every 2 minutes remove the lid and mix it well. Again cover and continue cooking sabudana.

Step 15: When sabudana turns translucent add roasted peanut powder, salt, sugar and mix everything well together.

Step 16: Fry the khichadi really good.

Step 17: Cover and cook the khichadi for about a minute. Sabudana khichadi is ready.

Step 18: You can have the khichadi as it is or serve it with buttermilk or mattha.

Notes

  • You can use ground nut oil in place of ghee.
  • You can skip cumin seeds if you don’t want.
  • If you want to use raw potato then cut it into thin slices.
  • Adding sugar is optional. You can skip it if you don’t want.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Don’t forget to soak sabudana well in advance. If you forget then roast sabudana a little and the soak it in enough water for an hour.
  • Soak sabudana really good. Follo all the steps I shared.
  • Roast peanuts really good and blend them well. Few whole peanuts should be there along with coarse powder.
  • Always use ghee to make khichadi
  • Do not add peanut powder immediately after adding sabudana.
