Ingredients

  • Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • A pinch of Hing
  • Curry leaves
  • Raw Peanuts
  • Finely chopped Onion
  • Finely chopped Tomato
  • 1 tsp Ginger-Garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Sunday masala
  • Red chili powder
  • 1 cup Rice
  • 1/2 cup split Green Gram
  • 3 cups Water
  • Salt to taste

Quick Waranga khichadi

Instructions

Step 1: Heat up oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.

Step 2: When mustard seeds pop up add cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves, peanuts and fry for few seconds.

Step 3: When peanuts turn reddish, add onion and fry well.

Step 4: Add tomato, ginger-garlic paste and fry everything together for about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5: Add turmeric powder, Sunday masala, red chili powder and fry well.

Step 6: Wash rice and split ghee gram together well for 3-4 times and drain all the water from it.

Step 7: Add the washed rice and dal into the pan and mix well.

Step 8: Add water, salt and mix well.

Step 9: Cover and bring it to boil on high heat.

Step 10: When the khichadi begins to boil turn the heat to medium and cook until all the water is absorbed for about 10 minutes.

Step 11: When all the water is absorbed, turn the heat to lowest possible setting and cook for another 10 minutes.

Step 12: Turn off the gas and let the khichadi be covered for another 5 minutes.

Step 13: Take the lid off and mix well once carefully. Waranga khichadi is all ready.

Notes

  • Use more oil than you use regularly.
  • You can add fresh peas if you want.
  • You can you kala masala or any other masala that you use regularly in place of Sunday masala.
  • Serve the khichadi with ghee, kadhi and papad.
