Ingredients

Appe

  • 1/4 cup / 50 gm Moong dal
  • 1/4 cup / 50 gm Masoor dal
  • 1/2 tbsp Fenugreek seeds (Optional)
  • 1/2 cup / 60 gm finely chopped Fenugreek leaves
  • 4~5 Garlic cloves
  • 3~4 Green chilies
  • Water as needed
  • 1 cup / 250 gm Jwari flour
  • 1 tbsp Red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
  • Lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Eno fruit salt
  • 1~2 tsp Water
  • Oil as needed
  • White Sesame seeds

Chutney

  • 2 tbsp roasted Chana dal
  • 1 Garlic clove
  • 3~4 Green chilies
  • 1/4 cup grated fresh Coconut
  • 1 tsp Moringa powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed
  • Coriander leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • A pinch of Hing
  • Dry Red chili
  • Curry leaves

Healthy Jwari appe

Instructions

Appe

Step 1: Mix moong dal, masoor dal and fenugreek seeds well together and wash it well together 3-4 rimes.

Step 2: Soak them in enough water for 30 minutes.

Step 3: Drain all the water from soaked dal and transfer it into a blender jar.

Step 4: Add garlic, green chilies and water and blend everything into fine paste.

Step 5: Mix jawar flour, red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt, cumin seeds and coriander powder well together in a bowl and add blended paste and water.

Step 6: Mix everything well together. The batter should have pouring consistency.

Step 7: Add fenugreek leaves and lemon juice and mix well.

Step 8: Add eno fruit salt and water and mix in quickly.

Step 9: Heat up appe patra on low heat and add oil and sesame seeds in each mold.

Step 10: Add spoonful batter in each mold.

Step 11: Cover and steam appe for about 2 minutes until lower side gets nice golden color.

Step 12: Add a little oil and sesame seeds on each appe and flip them over.

Step 13: When other side gets nice golden color, take the appe out and transfer them on a wire rack. Appe are ready.

Chutney

Step 14: Blend roasted chana dal, garlic, green chilies and fresh coconut well together into as fine paste as possible in mixer and add moringa powder, salt, water and coriander leaves.

Step 15: Blend everything well together into chutney and take it out into a bowl.

Step 16: Add lemon juice and mix well.

Step 17: For tadka heat up oil in a tadka pan and add mustard seeds.

Step 18: When mustard seeds pop up, add cumin seeds, hing, dry red chili and curry leaves and mix well.

Step 19: Add this tadka into the chutney and mix well. Chutney is ready.

Notes

  • You can use dal of your choice. As moong dal and masoor dal get quickly soaked, I have used it.
  • You can use spinach leaves in place of fenugreek leaves. You can add veggies of your choice like onion, capsicum, carrot etc.
  • You can use 1 tsp baking powder in place of eno fruit salt.
  • You can use 1 tsp curd in place of lemon juice in chutney.
