This is one of the favorite dishes in our home. This is an on-demand dish in our home. We can have it all seven days of the week of course if made by aai. This recipe doesn’t need lot many ingredients. You can make it from very few ingredients those are readily available in your pantry. Every mom is a fantastic cook. So it my mom!!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Tur dal
  • 1 cup + little more Water
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • Chopped Garlic
  • Chopped Green chilies
  • Curry leaves
  • Finely chopped Onion
  • A pinch of Hing
  • 1/2 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • 2 finely chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Water as needed
  • Salt to taste
  • Gudh to taste (Optional)
  • Finely chopped Coriander leaves

Marathi fodniche varan

 

Instructions

Step 1: Wash turdal really good 3-4 times and add water.

Step 2: Close the lid and cook the dal on high heat for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Lower the heat to low and steam the dal for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Beat the dal really good and keep it aside.

Step 5: Heat up oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.

Step 6: When mustard seeds pop up add cumin seeds, garlic and fry until garlic turns golden.

Step 7: Add green chilies and mix well.

Step 8: Add curry leaves, onion and fry well until onion begins to turn light golden.

Step 9: Add hing, fenugreek seeds and mix well.

Step 10: Add tomato and fry everything well together until tomatoes are cooked soft.

Step 11: Add turmeric powder and mix well.

Step 12: Add cooked dal, water to adjust the consistency and mix well.

Step 13: Add salt and mix well.

Step 14: Add gudh, coriander leaves and mix well.

Step 15: Simmer the varan well on medium heat and fodniche varan is ready.

Notes

  • You can cook the dal on medium heat until 2-3 whistles.
  • Adding gudh is optional. You can skip it if you don’t want.
  • Serve it with steamed rice and lot of ghee.
