Mahashivratri special Upwas Thali

Today we are making upwas thali on the occasion of Mahashivratri. We already have seen upwas thali recipes. This is yet another delicious addition to the list. This thali contains sabudana khichadi, ratalyacha kis, kavathachi chutney, shengdanyachi amti. Many people don’t eat bhagar or vrat ke chaval on Mahashivratri. So I have skipped it from our menu. Also it is important to have kavathach on Mahashivratri. Kavath means wood apple or belache fal. So I have included that too in this thali. You can try thist hali at home.

Mahashivratri is celebrated in the Marathi month Magha on 14th day of Krishna paksha. This is one of the auspicious festivals of Hindus. Lord Shiva is worshiped in this day and seek his blessings. This thali is easy to make and tastes nice. T

This is a upwas thali recipe. As many people don’t have bhagar on Mahashivratri I have skipped it from the menu. It looks nice and tastes simply delicious. People celebrate Mahashivtrari in the Marathi month Magh. It is celebrated annually in the honor of union of Shiva and Parvati. It is also said that the God performs his divine dance “Tandava.” The people worship the deity and fast the whole day and night.

Ingredients

Kavathachi Chutney

  • 2 Kavath / Wood apple
  • 1 cup Gudh
  • 1 tsp Red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black salt
  • Salt to taste

Sabudana Khichadi

  • 1 cup Sabudana
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seed
  • 2~3 chopped Green chilies
  • 1 boiled, peeled and chopped Potato
  • 1/2 cup roasted Peanut powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste (Optional)

Ratalyacha Kis

  • 3~4 Ratali / Sweet potato
  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 chopped Green chilies
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp roasted Peanut powder

Shengdanyachi Amti

  • 2 Green chilies
  • 1/2 cup roasted Peanut powder
  • Water
  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 2 green Cardamom
  • 3~4 Cloves
  • 3~4 Black peppercorns
  • Water to adjust the consistency
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp Tamarind-Gudh pulp

Upas Thali

Instructions

Kavathachi Chutney

Step 1: Break open the kavath and take out the pulp.

Step 2: Add gudh and mash it well together.

Step 3: Add red chili powder, black salt, salt and mix it well together. Kavathachi chutney is all ready.

Sabudana Khichadi

Step 4: Wash sabudana really good 3-4 times and soak it in enough water overnight or at least 4-5 hours.

Step 5: Heat up ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds.

Step 6: When cumin seeds splutter add green chilies and fry for few seconds.

Step 7: Add potato, soaked sabudana, roasted peanut powder, salt, sugar and mix well.

Step 8: Fry khichadi well together.

Step 9: Cover and steam on low heat for about 5-7 minutes. Sabudana khichadi is all ready.

Ratalyacha Kis

Step 10: Wash the ratali well and peel them.

Step 11: Grate it into long shreds.

Step 12: Heat up ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds.

Step 13: When cumin seeds splutter add green chilies and fry well.

Step 14: Add grated ratali and fry well.

Step 15: Cover and steam for about 4-5 minutes.

Step 16: Add salt, roasted peanut powder and mix well. Ratalyacha kis is all ready.

Shengdanyachi Amti

Step 17: Blend green chilies, roasted peanut powder together well once.

Step 18: Add water and blend it into paste.

Step 19: Heat up ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black peppercorns.

Step 20: Fry for few seconds. Add the blended paste, water to adjust the consistency, salt, tamarind-gudh pulp.

Step 21: Mix well and simmer amti for about 5-6 minutes. Shengdanyachi amti is all ready.

Mahashivratri upas thali

Notes

  • The quantity of the wood apple pulp and gudh must be same means for 1 cup pulp use 1 cup gudh for kavathachi chutney.
  • Adding sugar is optional. You can skip it if you don’t want in sabudana khichadi.
  • You can use 1/4 cup fresh coconut and 1/4 cup roasted peanut powder if you want for making shengdana amti.
  • You can skip the whole spices if you don't want in amti.
