Ingredients

  • 1 cup Tur dal
  • 3 cups Water
  • Turmeric powder
  • Slit Green chilies
  • Peeled and chopped raw Banana
  • Chopped Drumsticks
  • Chopped Carrot
  • Chopped Potato
  • Chopped Pumpkin
  • Chopped Green beans
  • Chopped Brinjal
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 2~3 tsp Ghee
  • Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Saunf / Fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Kalonji / Onion seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • A pinch of Hing
  • 2~3 bay leaves
  • Grated Ginger
  • Water
  • Cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Grated fresh Coconut (Optional)
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Dry Red chilies

Instructions

  • Wash dal really good 3-4 times with water.
  • Add water, turmeric powder, green chilies, raw banana, drumsticks, carrot, potato, pumpkin, green beans, brinjal, whole tomatoes and close the lid.
  • Cook on medium heat until 3 whistles.
  • You can use yam or radish or veggies of your choice.
  • Open the lid and take tomatoes out into a bowl.
  • Mix dal well once with veggies.
  • Heat up ghee in a pan.
  • When ghee is hot enough add mustard seeds and let them pop up.
  • Add cumin seeds, fennel seeds, onion seeds and fenugreek seeds.
  • These 5 ingredients together are known as ‘Panchporan masala.’
  • You can add all these ingredients together.
  • Add hing, bay leaves, ginger and fry for just a minute. Take care that the masala should not burn.
  • Add boiled tomatoes and mash them well.
  • Cook everything for anout 2 minutes.
  • Add cooked dal, water to adjust the consistency, cumin powder, salt and mix well.
  • Simmer on medium heat for about 5 minutes.
  • Add fresh coconut mix well.
  • Adding coconut is optional. You can skip it if you don’t want.
  • Heat up ghee in a tadka pan.
  • Add cinnamon sticks, dry red chilies and mix well.
  • Transfer this tadka on dal and mix well.
  • Dalma is all ready.
  • You can have dalma as it is as soup.
  • It goes fantastic with rice.
