Ingredients

For Cooking Rice:

  • 1/2 cup Rice
  • 1/4 cup split Moong dal
  • 1/4 tsp Hing / Asafetida
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 1/2 cup Water

For Palak Gravy:

  • 1 cup Finely chopped Onion
  • 1/2 cup Finely chopped Tomato
  • 2 cups Spinach leaves
  • Few chopped Green chillies (Optional)
  • 1 tsp Garam masala
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Red chili powder
  • 1 tsp Ginger-Garlic paste

For Tadka:

  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp Chopped Garlic
  • 2~3 Dried Red chillies

Instructions

For Cooking Rice:

  • In a cooker take rice and dal.
  • Wash rice and dal really good 2-3 times.
  • Add water, turmeric powder, hing and salt.
  • Mix well and close the lid of cooker.
  • Cook on medium heat until 2 whistles.

For Palak Gravy:

  • Wash palak really good and transfer it into blender jar.
  • Add a little water and green chillies.
  • Adding chillies is optional. You can skip it if you don’t want khichadi spicier.
  • Blend the palak into puree.
  • Heat up oil in a pan.
  • Add onion and fry on medium heat until it turns nice golden for about 5 minutes.
  • When onion gets light golden color add tomato, ginger-garlic paste, red chili powder, garam masala, coriander powder and stir well.
  • Cook for about 4-5 minutes until tomato is cooked nice and soft.
  • Add palak puree, salt and mix well.
  • Cook on medium heat for about 8-10 minutes until palak is well cooked.
  • Open the cooker and add water in cooked dal rice.
  • Take a whisk and beat the cooked rice and dal really good.
  • Add the rice and dal into cooked palak.
  • Stir well and cook on medium heat for about 5-6 minutes.
  • For Tadka:
  • Heat up ghee in a tadka pan.
  • You can use oil or butter instead of ghee.
  • Add cumin seeds, garlic and dried red chillies.
  • Cook for about a minute until garlic turns deep golden.
  • Add tadka in palak khichadi and mix well. Dal khichadi is already.

Notes

  • You can use any type of rice to make dal khichadi.
  • If you don’t want khichadi too soft or mushier then reduce the quantity of water in dal and rice.
