Ingredients

  • 1 cup Kala vatana / Black peas
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1 big sliced Onion
  • 4~5 Garlic cloves
  • 3~4 tsp grated dry Coconut
  • 3 tsp Oil
  • Finely chopped Onion
  • 1 tsp Malvani masala
  • 1 tsp Red chili powder
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Wash kala vatana really good and soak it in enough water overnight.

Step 2: Transfer the soaked vatana into a cooker and add water.

Step 3: Close the lid and cook on medium heat until 5 whistles.

Step 4: Heat up oil in a pan and add onion, garlic.

Step 5: Fry well until onion gets nice golden color.

Step 6: Move onion aside in the pan and add coconut in the pan.

Step 7: Fry coconut well until it gets nice golden color.

Step 8: Mix onion and coconut well and let the mixture cool down.

Step 9: Transfer the mixture into a blender jar and blend it well without using any water.

Step 10: Masala for making kala vatana sambar is ready.

Step 11: For making sambar heat up oil in a pan and add onion.

Step 12: When onion gets light golden color add malvani masala, red chili powder.

Step 13: Mix well and when masala is fried well add the fresh blended masala.

Step 14: Fry everything well for about 3-4 minutes.

Step 15: When masala begins to release oil add cooked vatana along with the water in it, salt and mix well.

Step 16: Bring it to boil and simmer for about 7-8 minutes.

Step 17: Kala vatana sambar is all ready.

  • You can decide the quantity of red chili powder depending on your taste and choice.
  • You can decide the quantity of water to be added depending on the consistency you expect.
  • You can serve it with malvani vade, ghavane or amboli or it goes well with rice too.
