Vatali dal is an authentic, Maharashtrian traditional recipe. Generally vatali dal or mikali dal is prepared for Ganapati visarjan as naivedya to bappa. This can be a perfect side dish too. It tastes just awesome. We already have seen this recipe last year. But this year we are giving it a shortcut. Try this recipe at home and drop a comment for me. Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Chana dal
  • 4~5 Green chilies
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • A pinch of Hing
  • Curry leaves
  • Lemon juice
  • A pinch of Sugar (Optional)
  • Finely chopped Coriander leaves

Instructions

  • Wash chana dal really good 2-3 times with water and soak it in enough water for4-5 hours.
  • Transfer the soaked dal into a blender jar.
  • Add green chilies, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, salt and blend it coarse in mixer.
  • You can add ginger if you want.
  • Transfer the blended dal into a pot and transfer the pot into the cooker.
  • Cover the pot, close the lid and cook on medium heat until 2 whistles.
  • When cooker cools down a little take the pot out.
  • Separate the dal with a spoon.
  • Heat up oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds and let them pop up.
  • Add cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves and turn off the gas.
  • Add the cooked dal, lemon juice, sugar.
  • Sugar is optional. You can skip it if you don’t like. Mix well.
  • You can add tadka of dried red chilies too if you want.
  • Add finely chopped coriander leaves and mix well.
  • You can add shredded fresh coconut if you want.
  • Vatali dal is all ready.
