Tandoori roti as the name suggests is made in tandoor. Making tandoori roti in tandoor gives it that unique flevar and texture. Tandoori roti can be made from maida as well as wheat flour. But usually tandoori roti that we get in restaurants is made from maida. But today we are makinh tandoori roti using whole wheat flour and that too on a skillet.

Yes, you heard right, we are making it not in tandoor but on a skillet. I will be telling you tips and tricks for making perfect tandoori roti. Moreover this recipe doesn’t need lot many ingredients. It can be made using few ingredients those are available in your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Wheat flour
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp Baking soda
  • 1/2 cup Buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 tsp oil
  • Butter
  • Finely chopped Coriander leaves

Instructions

Step 1. In a bowl take wheat flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda and mix everything well together with a wooden spatula.

Step 2. Add buttermilk, water and mix well. 

Step 3. Stir with wooden spatula in one direction.

Step 4.Knead the dough well.

Step 5. Add oil and knead the dough for another 5 minutes.

Step 6. Coat the dough with a little oil, over and rest it for about 30 minutes.

Step 7. Take the dough and knead it once more to make smooth and even.

Step 8. Take small portion and make it smooth and even.

Step 9.Dip the dough ball into dry flour and roll it into roti.

Step 10. The roti should be a little thick than chapatti.

Step 11. Heat up a skillet on medium heat.

Step 12. Brush water on one side of the roti and place the watered side on the skillet.

Step 13. The roti should stick well to the skillet.

Step 14. Roast the roti for just 2 minutes until small bubbles appear on upper side of the roti.

Step 15. Lift the skillet and turn the gas on high heat.

Step 16. Roast the upper side on high heat directly on the gas really good, until it gets nice browning.

Step 17. Again keep the skillet on the gas and roast roti well from lower side too.

Step 18. Spread a little butter on upper side and loosen the roti from the skillet.

Step 19. When lower side is also roasted well take the roti off into a dish.

Step 20. Garnish with coriander leaves and tandoori roti is all ready.

Step 21. You can make 6 medium size roti from 3 cups wheat flour.

Notes

  1. You can use curd in place of buttermilk.
  2. You can add 1/4 cup additional water if you want.

Tandoori roti can be served with any north Indian sabzi like veg maratha, veg makhanwala, shahi paneer, paneer tikka masala etc. Enjoy this roti with your favorite sabzi.
